Done and Dusted

Today is the last day for our group project of the game. Everyone has worked really hard up towards the end of this semester for the project and I'm happy with how the game has turned out. We still have a few more things to add which I think Taylor will try do tonight. I'm keen to play the game!!

Finished Background!

I've finished the backgrounds for Team Sprout! I reached my goal which was too have the backgrounds finished by today. I had a lot of problems trying to connect my cintiq, but I still managed to finish quite early today. I had fun painting the trees even if they did take a while. I added coloured mushrooms in the midground to add more colour other than green and blue to the backgrounds. The flax bushes also look pretty neat! I hope they at least point out that this is 'set in native NZ forests' as well as the Koru plants. I decided not to add flowers as it already looks nice as it is. Plus Taylor is adding my flower asset into the game multiple times, so we don't want to over crowd the background :)

Alive Backgrounds

On Saturday, I started painting up the alive versions of the background sections I've painted. I'm so glad Taylor showed me the clipping mask tool! It helps soooo much.
Taylor showed the group her alive background for the first section and I've colour picked from it. This helped me get most of it done on Saturday.

In terms of the trees in the midground, where the character will be walking along, I have to paint over the trees to better match up with Taylor's. Rather than having the norms of brown trees, they will be green. This is a better contrast with the once dead background and it looks a lot more lively.

First I colour picked form the pathway and coloured over the tree and changed the layer to 'linear light' This helped me see the detail of the tree underneath . The green doesn't match up with Taylor's, so yesterday I started working on the trees and colour picking from Taylor's painting. It's coming together really nicely.

Taylor turned some of her trees into Pohutukawa trees and I'd like to implement other native trees/ plants. For the section where there is a tree by itself, I will add yellow to suggest that it's a Kowhai tree. It wont look exactly like one, but different colours at least would be nice. I'd also like to add some flax bushes as well (without over cluttering!). As well as more things in the midground like a mushroom or flowers :)

Completed 'Dead' Backgrounds

YAY! I've finished both sections 3 & 5! (The dead state at least) The most difficult parts were the trees, Taylor gave me a hand as I wanted it to look similar to the style of the trees she's painted. The trees took a while, but I finally did it!
The layers are all separated into 2 backgrounds and a mid-ground which consists of where our sprout character will be running along.
For the foreground, it will just be a repeated silhouette that Taylor painted for the first section. The foreground is not so important, so repeating it is cool :) (not shown in my images below.

Our goal was to have the 'dead' background done by this week, so we can start on the 'alive' background. I think it'd be best for Taylor to do an alive background first before Mikayla and I dive in seeing as we want to keep the colour palette and style consistent just as the dead background. Taylor is doing quite a lot of work at the moment though which is putting everything into Unity and basically putting it together. She's doing such an excellent job!! I will ask her if she can paint up a quick one over the weekend so I can make a start for next week :)

Backgrounds for Team Sprout

I wanted a break from the first background section I was working on, so I started the other section I'm allocated to doing.
As I drew up the steps of the branches for the slanted tree, I didn't want to make them to similar, but not too different at the same time. It already looks a bit too convenient that the branches are so evenly spaced out. Jo suggested making one branch slightly longer, for variation, but I thought that if the player were to jump on to the very end of the branch, they may fall down as the platform might not go that far or the player might head butt it while jumping up. Basically, it could end up tricking the player.

Taylor shared her progress of the first section in Team Sprouts facebook chat and the layers aren't as detailed as mine. Only the first layer being the midground has detail, while the rest is a silhouette. The group prefers the silhouette version over the detail fading as it gets further into the background (my first section I painted up). I was a bit guttered as I spent quite a lot of time trying to put in detail and to get it right, but as the group prefer the silhouette, I went over my detailed paint up in a matter of minutes. These things happen though and it will lessen the work load. Before I realised this all, I had already painted up a tree slightly further in the background, but I'll have to go over it with one colour....bummer, I like the way I painted. I can always save it for something else.
We all like Taylor's paint up of the first section, so I'm trying to get as close to it as possible.

Team Sprout Background Process

Oh dear, I didn't realise we were supposed to be blogging for this part of the assessment! (Thank you Jo for the reminder!)
So, basically what I've been doing is working on sections of the backgrounds for Game Sprout's game. Taylor, Mikayla and I are working on sections of the background. I asked Taylor what section should I work on and she said I could choose. I first chose the two trees with the fire as I'm not comfortable with underground parts and trees are pre cool.
We each allocated sections as we definitely don't want to double up and we need to know exactly what it is we are painting. We took the level design that Tea drew up and have gone over it so it is clear to each of us of whose doing what section.

I'm quite slow at digital painting as it's still quite new to me and I'm not sure what methods to use exactly. I've been taking my time with this section of the background as I want to be careful with layers. We are working with parallax so having the different layers are very important.
Taylor cut up the level design mock up and cut it up so the sizes are even. Basically so that when we go to piece all our painted backgrounds together, it'll match up. I went over one of my sections rough out the environment, basing it off one of Taylor's concepts and colour picking as well.

I quite enjoy painting environments, but trees are something I still struggle with. Taylor gave me a hand in terms of making the tree look more rounded (in the final image) and getting the lighting from the fire animated. I went over the trees more once she gave me a head start and I cleaned it up more.





The animation of the light from the fire is a tad fast, but I'm just showing this for progress.

Update on Team Sprout

It's been a while, but I'm not sure if we're supposed to be blogging for the remainder of the Team Sprout process. (it makes sense to).
We had a meeting yesterday for our level design of the game. It got very messy as we tried to draw it up on paper. We added all our obstacle/ asset ideas and tried to spread them out evenly within the level.
As our game consists of the character travelling back through the same environment, we had to think of how to reuse the obstacles slightly differently. For example, Mikayla's obstacle idea was of the sprout sliding down into a riverbed and climbing up the roots to get to the other side. Once all the water is flowing again and he has to travel back, he could either hop on a lily pad and travel across or get flown over by a butterfly, or swing on a vine etc.

Tea drew up our level design really nicely and is easy to understand, which is handy! Today Taylor is blocking it out in unity to see how it all fits and works. She also wants to do the wise old trees which I know she'll do really well! We were thinking of the trees to be Kauri trees. They are old sacred NZ native trees and it would be great to portray these NPCs as this tree. We are implementing Maori carvings on to the trees as well - whereas the female Kauri tree may have a ta moko on her face.
I suggested to Tea that the character design could have a Pohutukawa flower on top of his head rather than purple, to better tie it in with the NZ native bush etc.
Jo has been drawing each of us as sprouts too! They're super cute!! So the other sprouts that the main sprout will find will be designed as us!

I will start drawing up parts of the environment for both dead and alive. I think it'd be best if we draw up the dead enviro first to see how it fits together, then do the alive enviro. I'll talk to Taylor and Mikayla about this.

Animated Assets 008

YAAAS!! Everything is going very well! After all that stressing over the break, I've finally finished my animated assets for Team Sprout :)
On Saturday night I tried doing as much as I could, but I got stuck on the part where there's a box like set up of idle→transition_f→moving state→transition_b→idle in the Animator window. This is because I wasn't sure if I had to do this as my assets are looping entirely.
Today in class, I asked Lena and she said that all I really need is the looped animation, not even an idle. I didn't realise just how easy making all of this was, until I did it for myself. In class it was quite overwhelming, but going through Lena's tutorial videos were excellent (thank you!).

On a..bad note. As I was quite caught up with the animated assets during the break, that I forgot to contribute a background concept going from burnt down to nice. I am disappointed in myself, and I hope I haven't let my team down. We are only having one background for this hand in, but the background may change. If the team would still like me to do a concept, I will!

I am pre positive that I am done with my individual submissions, I just need to drop them into the google drive. Our team have decided that one person from our team will be putting all the animated assets into one unity file. We will all get as much as we can get done today...before we're kicked out of the class. We still have tomorrow to make final touches.

Sprouts N Stuff

I forgot to post this in the concept stage of this assessment. Each member of Team Sprout got given quite a few assets to look at and too choose 2 to animate.
The things that I had to look at were:
  • Mushrooms
  • Flowers
  • Plants
  • Sprouts
The day before we had a minutes meeting I already had a head start and had already drawn up 2 pages of flowers and mushrooms. I drew a few sprouts, but they didn't seem as interesting. This is why I went with the mushroom and flower to develop and animate. But here are a few sketches I did of sprouts and a koru. Even though they wont be animated assets, they can still be included in the environment.

Animate aka Flash is Working!!

I just reinstalled Creative Cloud (thanks to Taylor!!) AND FLASH AKA ANIMATE IS WORKING.
LIKE IS THIS A DREAM?!!!
I'm still a bit worried that it wont work the next time I open it and it's like a trial or something. BUT IF this program decides to actually work at HOME for me, then I will have a much smoother time doing my experimental animation project this coming term :D
For once, something this break is going RIGHT. I did put a lot on my plate for the first week of the project back at course, but I may just try and stick to the production schedule as it will challenge me in terms of time management (since I may be able to do it at home as well).

Yes, this is a screen shot of Animate, but this is so exciting to me! I might not have to stress in course available hours to get this project done!! (touch wood) Don't want to jinx this D:

Animated Assets 006 Plus Stressing

This post was written on Sept 30, but the internet wouldn't work, so I couldn't post it until now.
So yesterday was a nightmare. I've been quite busy lately, so I wasn't able to start the animation process as well as turning them into sprites until yesterday. I managed to animate the mushroom and flower which both turned out nice. BUT as I have a cracked version of Photoshop, I can't install the Sprite Sheet Generator D: Let alone the internet wasn't working all day, so I couldn't even do research for my other assessment.
Taylor offered to turn my assets into sprites (I have no way of doing this) so at the moment I am trying to send the Photoshop files to her. Unfortunately the internet keeps breaking up, so I don't know when they will send >.< !!!!
I'd be able to do this all at course just fine as I'd have the resources. I can't work at home efficiently.
Here are my animated Mushroom and Flower. I simply transformed the mushroom to squash and stretch. This is due to the fact that we are going for a cute factor for our game & I feel like this method helps. As for the flower, I only painted up 4 frames (Each flower took 20mins, so it was pre fast). I didn't want the animation for this to be smooth as it wouldn't compliment the water colour style as well as the amount of detail in it. Both animations are loops, so if I'm correct, there wont be transition_f or transition_b. It'll more like idle to moving state and back to idle.

Animated Assets 005

Today I'm finally starting the animating assets process. I've done concepts for flowers and mushrooms and have shown the group. I didn't get much feedback, just which ones they like. I've been quite busy the past few days, so I haven't had time to do this...also I haven't been looking forward to it as I got quite confused in class. But thank goodness Lena uploaded video tutorials and hopefully it all goes well!

I asked the team if they want borders or not. I've mentioned on a previous post that this would be a neat way to portray our game emerging from a book or something along those lines. The border I have in the image is a bit too thick. I have a feeling the group won't like the border idea too much, so I might make a start to animating the mushroom with no border for now.

I tried painting these mushrooms with minimum outlines and they came out quite nicely. They may be a bit too complex for our game, but I'll see what the team says :)
They were fun to paint! Pretty colours too waaaah~

Animated Assets 002

I'm still rather new to water colour, especially digitally. I had a go with some water colour brushes that Mikayla shared with the group. They look, alright? But I know I can do better and make them look a lot more appealing. Perhaps by adding more colour or contrasting colours into them.
These concepts are simply trying out the brushes and colours. I added a white border to show my idea of them being 'cut out' from a book. It doesn't work just yet as it would look more tied together once compiled with the environment. The red mushroom looks more 'watercoloured' than the other mushrooms.

I had a look at some water coloured mushrooms to get a better sense of what to do. These mushrooms don't have an outline, but I think our game will do better with objects that have outlines if in the foreground. Elements within the background can probably go without outlines, so the focus is more on the fore and mid grounds. 




I will try more complex approaches to watercolor the mushrooms in photoshop. Even if it is a tad too complex, simplifying it shouldn't be too difficult. Trying different brushes will also help determine the look an style of the object, so I will try as many as I can.

Animated Assets 001

I'm finally carrying on with the second assignment for Team Sprout which is to build animated assets for our game. I told the team last week that we should aim to have a final style as well as a colour palette for our environment by ...today HA. We've all been quite busy, but now that it's the holidays, we can get a crack on with this assignment.

Today I'll paint up some mushrooms and have a look at colours. We're also going for a water colour look which is going to look really beautiful (it will because Team Sprout have amazing artists). I imagine there to be a white outline around the assets as well as the environment, as if you've cut out the image from a book and it has a border. At least this is what I imagined when Team Sprout were having the meeting. I'll give it a go and see if the team like it :)

On another note, I've been looking at some art from Winnie the Pooh and Peter Rabbit. I had an idea where the start of the game where the forest is burnt down, could be simply black and white and as the game progresses, colour is brought back as life is put back into the environment. This would be a mission to carry out, but it's just an idea for now :)



I like the how the image isn't fully coloured in. There's negative space surrounding the image of the characters Pooh and Piglet which I reckon would be neat to try out for our environment.
I really like the desaturated colours as well.


For Peter Rabbit, I like the fainter outlines as well as the colour being slightly more vibrant in different areas. The elements in the background are faded more than the elements in the foreground which I find very interesting. It helps the viewer focus towards the foreground which would be an advantage to our game.

Production Schedule

So animate wouldn't download last night D: Apparently there are some files missing that are required to download animate. I have written my production schedule based on the assumption that I will only be able to access animate at course. I will try to get animate during the break which will hopefully work as it will speed up my work flow greatly! On the assumption that Mondays and Fridays are the only days that I can animate, I have only filled out these days for my schedule. Working only two days during the week is very insufficient. I will try to use Wednesday and Friday afternoons if available to keep up to track.
if animate decides to work with my PC, I will make a new production schedule to better fit in with working at home.

Combining Disciplines

On Monday we had to mash two disciplinary exercises that we have gone over this term. I chose patterning and comic book remix. Taylor and I painted up abstract backgrounds and swapped the files.
The illustration/ animation had to show what society looks at it's happiest.
I didn't put much thought into it & found it challenging. I tried to see what images I could make out of the abstract background whilst keeping in mind what we had to show.
I wanted to put my nightmare character in the illustration. The image is of 'Nightmare' being applauded. Nightmares are seen as bad things, but after researching about them, I understand that it's simply ourselves trying to say 'open your eyes and accept'. Perhaps 'Nightmare' did some good. It's not really showing 'what society looks at it's happiest, but it is a positive image :)


Animate/ Flash hates my PC

I've been trying to reinstall flash/animate, but it wont download as some files are missing. I downloaded something that will hopefully help this. Hopefully I don't get any viruses D: I did a system restore, so I hope everything works out. But since this is taking forever, I will make the production schedule based on me having to rely on using flash at course...which sucks.

Update on Brief

I am currently working on my final brief that is due tomorrow. i will not be posting parts of it on my blog as that's basically doubling up. I have a fair idea of what I want to do for my experimental animation, so writing out the brief is going well. I'm about half way through and will shortly ask for peer feedback to complete the brief.
Regarding the production schedule, I am unsure how I will go about it. I don't have flash at home - even downloaded versions seem to not like my PC. Jerwin gave me animate the other day, but I am still yet to try it out. I'm worried that it wont work as this will majorly effect my work flow for production next term as I'll only be able to use animate/ flash at course.
The result of animate working or not will determine my production schedule. If animate decides to magically work in the middle of my production time, then I will definitely change the schedule which will help me finish the project faster!

Compression

Today I talked to my tutor to see if I'm on the right track in terms of incorporating psychological processes into animation *breathes because long sentence. Thankfully I am → psychological loops.
I told him how I wanted to incorporate a TV fuzz to suggest the user trying to remember or interpret their dream/ nightmare. He mentioned that over time things get distorted and slowly lose their quality or meaning. E.g. Constantly compressing a photo causes it to lose its quality. Recalling a memory that occurred years prior that have been remembered differently over time etc.

I realised this also happens with blood lines. (this isn't a fact.. At least I don't think it is. Rather my thoughts and how I think it works.) e.g. The Maori bloodline. The last full blooded Maori passed away years ago, but their are still people with Maori blood in them (me for example). Slowly, but eventually the Maori blood within my children's children and so on will dilute and won't be as strong as say my Nanas. I suppose this can be another way of looking at things losing their meaning, quality, etc.

I can use this idea in my animation as the quality decreasing within the animation as it plays out or even over lapping frames to show it becoming unclear. Distorting the original scene or by slowing losing it's quality or becoming dimmed.

Recurring Nightmares

I feel like I've looked a lot into dreaming itself, but not as much into nightmares as I would've hoped. Like I reckon I've got a good understanding, but need a tiny bit more to get the ball rolling for more ideas for my experimental animation.


I like the idea of the tidal wave. This is due to the fact that I imagine my animation to be at sea with a lighthouse making loops. The tidal wave can end the animation by 'waking the user up'.

Transdisciplinary Framework

I'm trying to further attempt the brief this weekend.
I will be going through each part carefully so I don't repeat myself too much and hopefully make sense. I've made a rushed post of going through the brief, but in this post, I will think more along the lines of a near final version.

This will be a 2D animated, experimental short film integrating psychological techniques of the functions of how the unconscious dreams or more specifically, has nightmares. 

A dream is a manifestation of images and sometimes sounds which show common and uncommon interrelations. Dreaming occurs when the unconscious mind is at work. When the user is sleeping, dreaming comes into place. These dreams can range from experience in reality, things that the user feel will happen in the near future and also what the user is afraid of or what they are afraid of that may happen in reality. These are just a few examples of what the unconscious mind dreams about. It is different for everybody as everyone is unique and has their own share of experiences and knowledge. 

Nightmares associate with anxiety, fears, what the user stresses about in reality and traumatic experiences. It will be important to know the elements of nightmares and how they work. 
E.g. Dreaming about a car crash would reflect that the user has once experienced a car crash, is worried it will happen, has had small scares while driving, thinks they are a bad driver etc. Nightmares can help the user open their eyes to what the user has been afraid to accept in reality and when the user needs healing. If the user opens up to their nightmares and accepts them, they will vanish. If the user doesn't listen to the dream/nightmare, it may repeat or at least an element of that said dream.

In Sigmund Freud's findings, he found that things we don't accept through out the day can result in 'above' unconscious dreaming where everything is let out within that dream (negative thoughts & worries). The unconscious dreams about these neglected thoughts by helping the user accept these thoughts and ideas, so that the user can move on with their life.

Why do have nightmares?
Nightmares appear when we need healing,  when we resist change or stuck in a pattern ➡️ in a pattern of pretending that we are small, weak creatures. People who are confident in themselves & are powerful & strong are less likely to have nightmares & will have a better nights sleep. Nightmares are not exterior, but come from within - as out reflections and behaviors.
"scary dreams are a way that our souls use to grab our attention. They are high volume wake-up calls from our spirits that let us know it's time to listen". Nightmares contain empowering, life-affirming messages. If you open up to your nightmares &  accept them they will vanish. If you don't listen to your dream/nightmare, it may repeat or at least an element of said dream.

Animated Assets

Team Sprout
Our new summative is to create 2 environment assets and animate them as sprites. We had a meeting today & Jo is typing the minutes up. We went through assets that would potentially be in our environment as well as animals & bugs. After that we picked what we would chose to draw up & further develop.
Yesterday I already had in mind what I wanted to contribute which are mushrooms & flowers. I drew up a few concepts for each & will ask the group what concept they like the best so I can start developing them into a polished asset.
We each have more than one asset that we will draw concepts of. I will also be drawing up sprouts & other plants. I will look more into native NZ plants also.

TV Fuzz Idea

When you forget parts of a dream, you can also see it as the 'TV fuzzing out' when the reception to the TV is temporarily lost, the screen goes into a gray fuzz. This could work well with the animation. By incorporating this idea into my animation, it can suggest when  a dream has ended or when it turns into a nightmare. With recurring nightmares, something about the nightmare changes which causes the dreamer to surprise or scare said dreamer. So even having a gray fuzz like a TV at random could work - at random to surprise the viewer - uncanny timing.

Ok, so of course I had to bring in my favourite game being Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts :D YAAAS!! So at the beginning of the KH2 (Kingdom Hearts 2) a character's memory is being restored bit by bit. Cut scenes from previous games are shown, but every now & then it fuzzes out like a TV losing reception. This process would be backwards for dreaming as you start of with the dream as a whole (so to speak) & parts of it slowly fade away.

1000 Dreams - David Fontana. Freud on Dreams PG 32, 33
Freud drew distinctions between what he calls 'above' & 'below' dreams. Dreams from below come from the unconscious "may be regarded as inroads o the repressed into waking life", while dreams of above result from the day's events -repressed from the ego. Things we don't accept through out the day can result in 'above' unconscious dreaming where everything is let out within that dream (negative thoughts & worries).
The ego continually strives to placate the id (the primary part of the mind, primordial instincts), to persuade it that its drives are not going unheard by consciousness as a whole. If the go fails in this(...) the pent-up instincts & buried traumas of the unconscious can break through and even lead to a full-scale mental breakdown.

Brief Run Through 002

Objectives of the Project:How do you know if you’ve done a good job? How will you measure the quality of whatever the end result will be? 
I feel like even a rough stage of the animation would show it's completion as dreams/ nightmares are rarely vivid. Even when they are vivid, they soon enough become fuzzy & forgotten.

What do you hope to get out of it? Is it purely for enjoyment? Are you trying out new techniques? Is there a particular skill you’d like to improve on? 
I hope that..people will feel uncomfortable ? It's kind of a stink way to put it, but I know if I were to watch my own experimental animation of with aspects of nightmares, I wouldn't think of nightmares. Horror or psychological thriller would most likely come to mind. But that's just what a nightmare is, only on screen, move vivid & ..someone else's nightmare or weird idea to scare people.
I don't think I will be trying out new techniques. I did think of implementing a light of sort, like a light house loop to circle back to the 'camera' with each recurring dream. I think this will be achievable in after effects. But I'm pretty useless in after effects! A skill I'd like to improve on is animation itself as well as planning. I've been doing animation for a while now, but I've never been good at it. Planning would be great to get better - simply to get things done on time without too much stress.

Who are the target audience? As an experimental film, this could very well be highly personal. But it doesn’t matter how weird or esoteric your project might be, there will be an audience out there for it. Try to think of what that group of people might be.
Target Audience would be 18 and over. For children it may scare them, whereas adults have more experience, obviously with dreaming as well as watching horror movies. That could relate to the animation by triggering something that they saw in a horror movie or even in their own nightmares. Nightmares are very personal things, but all have similar traits. So I would try to convey this disciplinary for everyone to be able to relate to.

How can you utilise your existing knowledge of animation, design and narrative principles to enhance the appeal of the project? 
I can definitely play around with the animation principles as nightmares are out of the ordinary. So uncanniness can definitely come into play. This would work well with playing around with timing or trying straight ahead from time to time - to mix it up.

Brief Run Through 001

I've been slowly going through the brief to fill out parts that are required for our own write up. I just hope that I'm on the right track! I've done quite a bit of research (well I think) & I feel like I can incorporate my own thoughts & views on dreams / nightmares to complete this assignment.

Dreams

Your brief must include a short statement (approx. 100-200 words) summarizing the discipline you have chosen to integrate into animation. 
Dreaming occurs when the unconscious mind is at work. When the user is sleeping, dreaming comes into place. These dreams can range from experience in reality, things that the user feel will happen in the near future and also what the user is afraid of or what they are afraid of that may happen in reality. These are just a few examples of what the unconscious mind dreams about. It is different for everybody as everyone is unique and has their own share of experiences and knowledge. 

Creative Process:
What aspect of your chosen discipline are you going to integrate into animation? 
My second disciplinary comes under Psychology. I have chosen 'dreams' or more specifically 'nightmares'. 

How will it integrate into the animation process? 
I will take the elements of nightmares functions and apply them to the animation process. These elements include recurring nightmares, so loops in other words. Symbols or objects changing within each loop. The animation would start off quite vivid & will slowly go fuzzy & eventually will fade out with a few clear (ish) images. The reason for this is that we remember our dreams rather clearly when we wake up, but over time they become fuzzier. 
Nightmares are caused by anxiety & stress, so if I were to turn my experimental animation into a narrative based animation, I would better incorporate these traits. 

How will you generate ideas and content? 
I will thoroughly think of the cause of nightmares as well as the elements within nightmares to brain storm ideas. I say I have a good understanding of nightmares as well as dreams to pick out the main functions of dreaming. 

At what point will you know the project is “finished”? What will mark the end of your process? 
As dreaming is a never ending cycle for the unconscious mind, I feel that ending an animation would be best to simply fade out or stop after a few cycles/ loops. For a narrative based animation, would be when the character has accepted the recurring nightmare which would be when the nightmare fades away or becomes a 'positive dream'. 

Will you need to do anything extra to the animation to “package” it in an appealing way? 
At this stage....I am not sure yet. 


The next area to cover is the Scope of the Project which I haven't really thought about.

How long will the animation be?Right now, I'm looking at a minute? I want to keep it short & to the point. If I have narrative
 to it, perhaps 1 minute 30 seconds.

What software or other animation tools will you be using? 
I will be using flash & maybe photoshop & after effects.

What format will it be in? Will it just be a digital video, or will it need to be played in a specific environment (physical or digital)?
It will definitely be a digital video.

Will you need to source any extra equipment or resources to complete the project? If so, have you considered how you will source them?
Nope & nope :)

What other restrictions or parameters need to be considered? 
Uggh, good question..I'll come back to that.

Carl Jung & Sigmund Freud

1000 Dreams - David Fontana.  Jung on Dreams PG 20, 21 & 22.

-Worked closely to Freud from 1909 to 1913.
Jung departed from Freud in his realization that the common themes running through the delusions & hallucinations of his patients could not all emerge from their personal unconscious conflicts, but must stem from some common source. He found among various dreams of different patients that they echoed the themes of myths from all over the world.
"His extensive knowledge of comparative religion, mythology & symbol systems such as alchemy convinced him that similar common themes run across cultures & across the centuries, & thus was born his belief in the collective unconscious, a genetic myth-producing level of the mind common to all men & woman, & serving as the well-spring of psychological life". For Jung, he believed that 'grand/ great' dreams were gateways to a mythic world "the vast historical storehouse of the human race".
Jung criticized Freuds method as it allowed the mind to freewheel which leads away from the original image. Jungians concentrate on the dream & constantly return to the original image - preventing the mind from wandering. For Jung psychotherapy is a process of discovery & self-realization. "Jungians believe that by being in touch with the mythic themes of our collective unconsciousness, we gradually integrate the disparate & sometimes conflicting aspects of our selves, developing our full potential as we pass in turn through life's successive stages. 

1000 Dreams - David Fontana. Freud on Dreams PG 26, 27 & 28
Freud's famous technique is known as Free Association. You wake up & unpack the dream by writing down the meanings of the dream. You take each object, person & situation within that dream. The idea is to write down things about these objects & so on - With your mind running freely (What Jung was against). You write everything down, anything that comes to mind. You then chain it together to make better sense of the dream.
"The basic idea behind free association is to trick yourself into unconscious revelations. You have deliberately lowered your guard, & it is in these circumstances that you are most likely to hit upon unexpected truths".
Results of free association are associated with emotional damage caused in early childhood. He recognized that this revealed the crucial importance of the unconscious.
Freud described dreams as "the royal road to the unconscious". Freud believed that the primary process takes unconscious impulses, desires & fears, & turns them into symbols; these are linked by associations that have no regard for categories such as time & space, or right 7 wrong, as the unconscious is unaware of the logic, values & social adaptations of conscious life.



My Thoughts.
I can understand both Jung & Freuds methods for unraveling dreams. To stick with the original dream as much as possible to get a better understanding without warping the dream & turning it into something completely different. As well as brain storming & even going off on a slight tangent to understand a dream. I know that I unconsciously do both of these methods when I wake up. If it was a vivid dream, I try my hardest to replay it in my head, but by the end of the day it is completely different. The same goes for when people tell others about what they got up to last week or even what they dreamt about: They sugar coat it. They twist what happened to make it more interesting & sometimes the original content is lost. Over exaggerating, twisting, distorting, improvising. When humans tell stories, there is a beginning, middle & end. But not all dreams have this. So it is natural for us to want to find an ending to our dreams, to make sense of it, so we can't help but change the original content just a bit.
On another note, an artist would say that their work is finished, but others would say it looks incomplete or not final. Dreams can be the same, if they are not complete, it can reflect something that is happening in the users life that is incomplete. But as humans, we want a completed story, for some it is more difficult to comprehend.

Something unrelated to my findings on Jung & Freud.
I came across something very interesting which is that humans don't dream until they are around the age of 3. Before my sister turned 3 this year, she had a 'nightmare' about frogs. She is not afraid of frogs, in fact she loves them. It's the fact that she had seen images in her unconscious sleeping state for the first time that frightened her. With his, I understand why children are more affected by 'nightmares'.
One, they are still new to many things & don't experience stress the way adults do (as stress is what can trigger nightmares). Saying this, I feel like adults turn a blind eye to nightmares as they don't see them as nightmares. They accept them & simply see them as signs of stress.
My theory is that when children have nightmares, they unrealistic. e.g. the classic monster hiding under the bed or in the closet. If an adult had this same dream, they would wake up and brush it off, seeing the logic in it - like their dog being under the bed. Adults nightmares probably include things like not paying the bills on time, getting fired or being unsuccessful. I can't fully say for adults as I am just entering adulthood now. For teenagers, nightmares can be things such as not knowing what to do when they leave school, failing exams, missing the bus, messing things up etc. These are things that can trigger nightmares, or at least unpleasant dreams. I can definitely relate to the stresses of a teenager, as I am closer to that age range.

In other words, everyone has nightmares, but interpret them & accept them differently.

Nightmare

On Monday we got given the task to create a character out of our chosen disciplinary. My second disciplinary is turning more towards nightmares than the broad 'Dreams'. It was really fun making the characters!!

But ok, so like the top left one looks like a sheet over a tomato. The skull concept reminds me of Ghost Rider. The star just. What. The right concept looks like a chili worm and the bottom right looks like someone experimented on Pikachu. The top right ...Idk. Just. I was on a drawing roll...buuuuut not a good one.


SO I want with the 3 horned character concept which I based on Gastly, who is a ghost type Pokemon (and one of my favourites!! YAAAS).

The 'horns'on the head represent part of a star while the head is like a moon. In recurring nightmares, there is a repetition of an item. For the character it can be seen as the 3 horns 'repeating'.

And because I'm hella original, my character is called Nightmare. His ability is giving people nightmares by flying through them. Flying through the victim gives Nightmare all the knowledge of what the victim is afraid of along with all negative thoughts the victim has had in their lifetime. The nightmares loop in said person's head, but it changes ever so slightly each time it recurs.

I couldn't think of a final coloured version, so VARIETY. Perhaps depending on how strong the Nightmare/ Creature is, will depend on the colour. Yellow being a pre chill nightmare, but the kind of nightmare that repeats an embarrassing event reflected from reality. Light blue being something the person is worried will happen. Dark blue is the same as light blue, but more realistic. Purple is about a loved one that has passed on. Red is what the person is scared of.
So I'd say mainly stay away from Purple & Red D:

Colour Palette

I had a quick look at colours for our game. I really like Ivan Laliashvili choice of colours, so I decided to colour pick from 2 of his paintings. As our game is set in places like forests, the colours would vary. From earthy warm colours to cool colours like water and grass. We are aiming to have a very beautiful game so colour picking is very important. The colours I picked are quite light and not too harsh. The darkness of the colours would vary though in terms of shadows etc.
