Set Up Coloured

Here's the coloured version of the set up. With the ideas concerning lighting and colour that I had,.. I felt like it wasn't quite getting across to my group, so I thought a visual would help. It was different in my head which is unfortunate. Taylor helped me with the lighting and shadows as I'm just no good at painting on photoshop. So the light from a street lamp will be shining in through the holes in the sheet covering the window and will shine on the husband.
Dane did suggest making the room cramped and smaller. I did take this into consideration, but this is just a concept revolving around lighting, not so much the space.

World Colours

Ok, so I had to tie in kpop some how >:D kidding! there's a legit reason. So BTS released a mini album last year and they have two different colours: blue/ grey & yellow/orangeish (listen to the albummm so goooood)
ANYWAY the reason is that I reckon an overall colour scheme or overlay for each world would look really nice with these colours. The real world where the man is would be blue and grey, whereas the wifes mirror world would be yellow and orange. Cold and warm colours. \

We wont be showing much in the mirror world now, nothing will be reflected from the real world. The only things in the mirror will be the vanity unit, piano and Elizabeth. The background will be a soft mix of yellow and orange, similar to the album cover below. (Still need to run this over will everyone in the group until this idea is possibly finalized).

Set Up

Yesterday I drew up how I imagine the set up of the room to be. I will colour it as well, but for now, here is the line woooooork. I put the window next to the vanity unit as the light shining in from, say a street lamp, would slightly shine on the husband. This would make him pop out a bit as the background would

Vanity Unit Modelling Progression

Rather than having lots of posts of the progress of modelling the vanity unit, I'll have it all here in this one post. I'm aiming to finish it in one sitting anyway. These are mainly screenshots of added pieces to the final. Hopefully the group like it! I'll ask them to comment feedback.

Vanity Unit Modelling Progress

I'm going pretty slowly with the vanity unit because I want it to turn out really nice! It is what connects the husband and wife after all!!
I'm trying to think of the simplest ways to extrude parts also without making it look to complicated. Taylor doesn't want as much detail like the having straight legs for the unit and no fancy designs around the mirror.

Vanity Unit Items

Over the last 2 days I've been modelling small items that will be on the vanity unit. Even though the husband 'moved'the vanity unit out to the lounge, he could've put all the items in the drawers. But showing these items could help show the audience what she liked -doing her make up, brushing her hair. These small details could show that Elizabeth was a real person, not just an animated character that will be shown in the mirror. These items tie her to the real world.
I've began modelling the vanity unit and will post progress pictures in the next post. I hope it turns out nice!

Modelling Brush + Hand MIrror

It was quick and easy to model the hand mirror based off the hair brush. Seeing as they are a set, duplicating the brush and making small changes gave me the mirror. Taaaadaaaaaa

Modelling items

I've done what I can for now in terms of modelling the big furniture. I'm having a bit of trouble trying to round the vase as the bottom and top get all distorted and weird. So instead of using all my time to try make it work (and probably using the hardest methods) I'll start modelling the smaller things.

Starting with the hair brush. It'd make sense to have a 'brush set' match, shape wise, with the shape of the mirror. Not many people, or not many people that I know of, own a vanity unit these days, but having matched sets are hard to come by, so it would be ok if we had unmatching items in the scene upon the unit. But seeing as the furniture as a whole doesn't match, the vanity unit would be the exception. The woman would've cherished the vanity set, so she would've had matching things to compliment the vanity unit. Seen in the reference pictures below, these a set of a mirror, brush and comb. SO YEAH, I'll model this set to be pre similar. And yeah I should've looked at more brushes, but this is what I had in mind plus it matches the vanity mirror. win win.
Whooooa I'm thinking to much.

Start of 3D Modelling

I'm going pretty slow with 3D modelling at the moment. Haven't used maya since last year so I had to try to remember things as I went. Plus I'm not that good with maya, but modelling can be fun when I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING which hasn't really been the case -.- I've given up on the bookshelf for now 'cos well yeah, I don't really know what to do, so I'll ask Taylor for help next week at course. For the vase, Taylor said that the vase could stay this rectangular shape, but I'll duplicate it and round it off so we'll have more options. As for the coffee table, Taylor recommended making it tall and with shelves - might need to make a more square and less rectangular. I had a better idea of what I was doing with this rather than the book shelf. I might try different draw handles though later on.
All these objects/ furniture will have to look run down as well, so ...I don't know how to go about that. *Runs to the 3D Queen known as Director Taylor.

WEEK 5 Game Analysis

How does morality influence the choices you make in the game?

When I played the telltale adventure game The Wolf Among Us (2013), I would make choices that would go against my morals, but then I'd jump back to doing the right thing again. I planned on making some jerk choices like throwing the fable out of the window in the first sequence and staying silent at the wrong times, but then I feel bad, not just for Bigby, but because I'd be going against my morals - I wouldn't really throw someone out the window if they got on my bad side.
This did influence the choices I made at times as the character Bigby isn't liked by many characters and is 'the big bad wolf' and I felt sorry for him, I wanted to make good decisions and choices that would benefit him and others around him. Especially playing as a once villain, I wanted to make choices that would perhaps go with his true morals. Colin the pig said to Bigby that he likes to be seen as a lone wolf, which might not be the case.

The game does allow me to get into the character of someone else as it gives me multiple options on what to say to another character. This makes me feel like I really am the character, so I feel like I need to stick with my morals to help Bigby out.

One thing that did take me off guard was when a note in the top corner of the screen would say 'Colin will remember that'. This also influenced me to make moral based decisions and made me guilty for making a bad decision.
In 'Ethical Dilemmas and Dominant Moral Strategies In Games' , Brandon Perdue said "The model that rewards certain choices over others, or different choices in different ways, tends to functionally make the choices for the players; the player will be more successful at the game if he picks the optimal choice for his strategy." In Bigby's case, making the optimal choice definitely benefited his reputation. This is proven when I would choose the right dialogue or action to help others and it was greatly appreciated by the other characters.
In the gaming world morality does at times slip away, but eventually comes back. I can't say this for everyone's case, but this does apply to me when I played this game.

FINAL FINAL SCRIPT

So since we changed quite a bit too our story, I rewrote the script with Taylor's help. We have taken the meal part out, changed the mirror to a vanity unit, slightly changed some dialogue and shots. Plus added interesting focus shots. We didn't rewrite the entire script, just the necessary pats that needed changing.

INT: DARK APARTMENT, ROOM IS MESSY, RUN DOWN (PAST EARTHQUAKE - CRACKS IN THE WALLS, SLANTED WALL SHELVES, SLANTED PHOTOS AND PAINTINGS ON WALL, CEILING LIGHT HANGING LOW WITH VISIBLE WIRES, MAYBE BROKEN APPLIANCES, WATERMARKS ON CEILING AND WALL ETC).

LONG SHOT: FOCUSED ON DOOR. MAN WALKS INTO THE ROOM WITH HIS JACKET OVER HIS ARM. HOLDING BRIEFCASE AND ENVELOPES (BILLS).
MID SHOT: ON VANITY UNIT BY WALL. A FLICK OF A  SWITCH IS HEARD AND THE ROOM LIGHTS UP. A WOMAN PLAYING THE PIANO IS SEEN IN THE MIRROR. BACKGROUND OF MIRROR IS BLURRED. MAN IS TALKING IN THE BACKGROUND.

MAN: *Sighs* what a day. Work was so busy today I'm exhausted.
MID SHOT: MAN SITS DOWN AT VANITY UNIT AND SORTS THROUGH THE ENVELOPES.

MID OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT, ANGLED BEHIND MAN FOCUSING MORE ON MIRROR: MAN IS SORTING THROUGH BILLS/ENVELOPES.
MAN: "I'm so glad to finally be home. Had to fill in for George, you know how he is..."
MID SHOT OF WOMAN: WOMAN IN MIRROR GIGGLES SILENTLY. AS SHE GIGGLES THE FOCUS CHANGES FROM THE WOMAN TO THE NEWSPAPER THAT IS IN THE FOREGROUND (STUCK TO THE MIRROR).
MID SHOT OF MAN: HIS HEAD DROPS DOWN.
MAN: I miss you....it should've been me...not you.
MAN CLENCHES HIS FIST. HE HAS A GRIM EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE AND LOOKS REGRETFUL.

MID OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT: HE LOWERS HIS HEAD AND THE WOMAN LOOKS SAD AND APOLOGETIC. THE HOUSE INSIDE THE MIRROR STARTS SHAKING AND HE LOOKS UP. SHE LOOKS SLIGHTLY SURPRISED. MAN STANDS UP AND REACHES OUT TO HER.
MAN: No.... not again!!!

MID SHOT OF WOMAN (POV FROM MAN): WOMAN CALMS DOWN AND SMILES AT HIM SHE HOLDS UP HER HANDS TO GESTURE TO HIM THAT SHE IS OK.

MID SHOT OF MAN (POV OF WOMAN FROM WITHIN THE MIRROR WORLD): MAN RELAXES SEEING HER EXPRESSION AND ACTIONS.
MID SHOT (POV OF MAN): WOMAN SMILES EARNESTLY, PUTS A HAND ON HER HEART AND HER OTHER ARM REACHES OUT TO HIM AS HER HOUSE FALLS APART. SHE STARTS TO FADE AWAY AND THE PERFECT HOUSE STARTS TO REFLECT THE ACTUAL APARTMENT IN THE REFLECTION. WE ARE LEFT WITH HIS REFLECTION IN THE MIRROR. HE HAS A SAD EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE AS HE LOOKS AT HIS REFLECTION.
THE NEWSPAPER FALLS DOWN FROM THE MIRROR AND LANDS ON THE VANITY UNIT TABLE.

CLOSE UP OF NEWSPAPER.

MID SHOT OF MANS REFLECTION: THE MAN IS UNFOCUSED AND IS LOOKING DOWN AT THE NEWSPAPER SUGGESTING THAT HE IS SAD WITH HIS HEAD DOWN. A PHOTO THAT IS FOCUSED IS SELLOTAPED TO THE MIRROR IN THE FOREGROUND DUE TO THE NEWSPAPER FALLING DOWN. THE PHOTO SHOWS THE HAPPY COUPLE TOGETHER. THE FOCUS SWAPS AND THE MAN LOOKS UP AND SEES THE PHOTO. THE MAN SMILES AND FINDS COMFORT IN THE PHOTO. THE SCREEN FADES.

Final Furniture

Having the style of the house/apartment to match is important. It would be unfitting if the decor was contemporary whereas the vanity unit is more vintage. It wouldn't just stand out, it would really be out of place and wouldn't work. The furniture I've been looking at is more rustic + vintage. It also suggests that the couple weren't doing that well financially, so the husband wouldn't have fixed up the place or would have half finished fix ups; wallpapering not finished etc.
Rather than having things match, like matching coffee tables and shelves, we'll have slightly different furniture. As if some were hand me downs, bought from garage sales, free off the street and so on. An element that should tie it altogether is colour, which will be a desaturated turquoise. The vanity unit will be desaturated turquoise also, but perhaps every other bit of furniture will have a lot more paint erosion, so lots of brown will come through being the wood. The couch could probably be grey, as we don't want to overdose on the turquoise. Taylor found an awesome turquoise palette that we can refer to when implementing colour.
SO on to modelling!!

More furniture

Had a look at more furniture. I imagine the house to be messy and unorganized. The husband is lost without his wife so he doesn't clean up after himself well. He even sleeps in the lounge to stay by the vanity unit. (Originally the vanity unit would've been in their room) We were going to have him sleep out in the lounge with the mirror when he could obviously move the mirror. Also is would be weird when you think about it 'why did he move the vanity unit into the lounge?' Well let's just say that the bedroom is very damaged annnnnd he managed to save her vanity unit? yeah. yeah we'll go with that. So a sleeping bag will be on the couch, clothes everywhere, basically he's living in the lounge - it's his bedroom now.
Messy like Merlin perhaps?

-used candles (tea tree or stick candles)
-vases|
-dirty clothes
-broken furniture
-piano
-book shelf  + books on ground
-sleeping bag + pillows

Taylor and I made a list of possible things that can be on the vanity unit.
-dead flowers (red roses)
-cracked vase
-bottles of perfumes
-hairbrush
-powder thing
-lipsticks
-eyebrow pencils
-hat
-necklaces
-magazines
-book stack
-cup (for brushes etc)
-little mirror

I had a look at some upright pianos as grand pianos are a bit much and an upright piano fits well.

Change to story

We have made a few changes today which is really exciting!

So we are changing the mirror to a vanity unit and cutting out the meal part. The vanity would've been a place that Elizabeth might have spent a lot of time at so it was special to her and is now special to the husband.
The husband will be focusing more on Elizabeth rather than a meal and will instead be sorting through some paper work or bills. This will also benefit us, as we wont have to green screen the table.

Taylor and I got a pre neat idea that came about from Keat. Keat suggested having Elizabeth sitting in a chair slightly away from the mirror. This way she wont be awkwardly seated right in front like she's always waiting for the husband to arrive home...which is kinda creepy when you think about it.
Instead she would keep herself occupied by playing the piano and it will be like she's playing the composed score. She would mainly be facing the piano peacefully and every now and then would smile at the husband or react to what he says e.g. giggle which we wont hear.
Once the earthquake occurs the music will stop and she'll fade away. When she is gone from the mirror the husband would've felt like he's entirely lost her - his world is silent. When the husband finds the photo of them (which will now be tucked into the frame of the mirror behind a note) the music of the piano will come back. When the music stops, it'll be like a grey sort of world for the husband, a silent world. But when he sees the photograph of him and his wife together the music will come back - like he's accepted her passing and know's that she's at peace.
I reckon these changes work well as ties everything in even more. The mirror has a stronger connection to the story and we also know a bit more about Elizabeth.

We shared this idea with the team and they're happy with this change :)
The plan now is to change a few panels in the story board and finalize the furniture to start modelling!!

Just expanded on the notes Taylor has written down
-World map on wall. A top corner can be drooping down.
-Shredded couch with rips and stuffing on the floor. Messy sleeping bad draped over the couch
-Coffee table with only 3 legs, stack of books supporting where the 4th leg once was
-Book shelf cabinet. One side of top shelf broken, books fallen to one side.
-Piano covered in dust and wood debris.
-Used candles scattered everywhere (small and stick candles)

Written Profile

Forgot to write up a profile for our animated character, being the wife. We've given her a name also, being Elizabeth. The husband I suppose, is still called 'Husband'. So here she is!

Furniture Research

Thought I'd chuck some furniture research up too before the hand in on Monday, just to get a better sense of the style I imagine the apartment to be. Reading the original script, I imagined a rather vintage style to the story as a whole - such as the set up of the apartment.
I haven't talked to the team about any of these yet, but it'll be something for them to look at and talk about when we're back at course next week.
I will be 3D modelling furniture and items in the next 2 weeks anyway, so best to get an early start. Plus it contributes to concepts (not character obviously, but still research for concepts).

OK SO I JUST GOT AN ANNOYING AND LATE IDEA THAT WE PROBABLY WONT USE BUT HEAR ME OUUUUUT.
I saw a picture of a set of drawers with a mirror and I thought 'Would the wife had spent a lot of time sitting there doing her makeup etc ?? I really reckon it'd be great if we could tie the mirrors connection into the story more as well. When I was looking at general mirrors the other day, I didn't even think of mirrors and drawers together -.- But yeah if it's too late, then bummer.

Character Expressions

We have our final design for our character! Designed by our wonderful director Taylor!
It shows Holly's features very well.
-Long eyelashes -Round face and cheeks -Exposed Forehead -Curly Hair etc.
Below is the final design drawn by Taylor and below that are expressions drawn by Taylor and myself. I couldn't quite figure out how to draw her well in front on, so Taylor did those, thank you Taylor!!
These expressions show the nature of the character which is kind and loving. We did think of drawing angry, but she isn't a very angry character and we show no signs of her being angry in the script. Also Taylor's style and my style are different. It is noticeable in the expression sheet. I will continue to practice drawing the character to capture more of Taylor style. Especially how we need to be in model and have consistency through out the animation, so practice is a must!

WEEK 4 Game Analysis

I feel like the choices I made in the turn based strategy game Banner Saga (2014) did contribute a sense of meaningful interactive moments. When I was younger and had no clue how to beat an enemy, I would mash the buttons and attack without thinking. I kind of had the same approach in this game where I straight off the bat would attack the enemy. This isn't a good strategy for the game.Banner Saga though.

The choices made between attacking the opponent or damaging their armor, sometimes, made a big difference in the outcome of the battle. When I first started playing, I would attack straight away to quickly exterminate the opponent, but as tougher enemies arose, I realized that I would need to deal with the armor first to finish them off more efficiently. Due to the choice of blindly attacking, I died quite a few times which was frustrating. Once I realized that damaging the armor would benefit my playable characters to defeating the enemies, I found the duels easier.

Although a lot of the time I made the choice to blindly attack, there were consequences for the characters I was playing, as in dying - or so I thought. One battle I played, a character did die in the battle and in the story. In another battle a character died, but was still alive in the story. This inconsistency caused me to realize that the choices I made weren't entirely bad, that is if the character was actually alive in the end of it. With this, it does feel like there's less stress on the choices I make as the deaths in battle and outcome don't affect the story too much.

In Fraser's spectacular lecture, there is a quote by Sid Meier saying "A game is a series of interesting choices." This applies in many games and definitely Banner Saga as what ever choice /move I make in a battle can lead to failure or success.

Also choosing what the playable character gets to say to another character. This doesn't change the flow of the story too much In the first story playing as Ubin, I chose to say to Gunnulf that he looks like a frog, thinking I'd offended him (I picked this because it was funny) when he replied 'better than an eggplant'. I did not imagine this response, but it helped show that not every choice you make in the game is as intense as in battling. The story didn't change as the conversation had simply ended.

In terms of battling, the choices I made were important as it could possibly result in a character dying. I feel like the writers of the game would've wanted these characters to die so the enemy could've been coded to target them. I would definitely have to play the games a few times to be sure though!

Mirror Research

WE NEED MIRROR RESEARCH!
I thought that if our character has straight hair, then we'd go for a round, circular mirror. If she has curly or wavy hair we'd go for a more rectangular shaped mirror. This way, the mirror and character would contrast more and the character would pop out more, which is want we want.
plus we don't want some extravagant mirror taking the attention away from the character.
Since our character has curly hair, we'll go with a rectangular shape. I will be posting some mirrors that I reckon will work and Patrick will work off that :)

Caricature Attempts

In our group meeting with the tutors, our tutor, Keat, suggested looking at caricature tutorials to help us draw our model and get a better understanding of her features. This really helped me as I was having trouble trying to stylize her, while we also wanted to make her look more realistic than cartoony. Plus Patrick suggested more three quarter angles :)
ALSO here is a lovely photo of our model Holly! #beautiful asdfghjkl

WEEK 3 Game Analysis

The adventure-action game Prince of Persia The Sand of Time in a way did engage me through the linear storytelling. It was rather interesting as I, the player, started playing in a battle field which was rather exciting. With this I felt like I couldn't slowly move around and have a look at the area - otherwise I'd get blown up, so I decided to move on to the next node. Although this would be the general idea of what the creators would want me to think - to quickly go through node to node and see how the events unfold. We as players have the control over time in the world of the game, even when parts of the palace were being blown up, nothing can really happen until I get to the next node.

When the Prince drinks water to recover his health and sheathes his sword at the end of a battle, the camera shot as well as the music gets really dramatic. It's unnecessary and over the top like the creators are leaning too much towards making it a cinematic. It could almost be considered as cut scenes, but it happens nearly every time the Prince drinks the water, so it's too repetitive. It can fit in with the character, being a Prince, seeing as he majestically drinks water and sheathes his sword as if he'd won a war. Although I argue that it's too much and simply not needed.

In Luban & Meziane's 'Turning a Linear Story into a Game' (2001) they talk about the choice of shots and what shots are important to utilize in gameplay. "Some shots are not always suitable for gameplay. The challenge lies in reconciling the player's comfort with moviestyle cameras". The camera shot used for the Prince drinking the water, being a close up of his face, isn't the best choice as it would've been fine if they actually left the camera as is. We can't control the Prince as he's drinking the water, so the camera changes to a shot that isn't suitable for gameplay, but with it happening for a mere 3 seconds in the middle of gameplay I feel like it is definitely too much.

First Group Meeting with the Tutors

Our group, Team Spinach, had our first recorded meeting with our tutors and it went really well. We all have a clear idea of what each person is doing and where they're up to. The feedback received was really helpful for everyone.
To be honest I got a bit nervous as recordings causes me to tense up a bit, but as we all shared feedback I felt more comfortable.
For my concepts that I showed the group , Patrick and Joseph pointed out to make the character look more tired as if she's been in the mirror for a long time and in a way wants to move on. - bags under eyes, messy hair etc.

Also Dane suggested to not have my character look so young. I saw this once I had drawn the concepts as I didn't have a clear image of what she'd look like, so I kinda just drew what came to my head. Whenever I draw characters they tend to be of a young age also. Showing the character has aged would be a bit difficult, but a good challenge.

Patrick also suggested to draw more concepts solely in three quarter view as we can get a better view of the character, also it would look a lot nicer. I totally agree with this, I mainly had her straight on as she's in a mirror which she will be seen straight on (not necessarily though as we play around with the camera angles. it would be a lot more interesting as an end result to show straight on as well as three quarter view. At least with this, we as an audience can also see that she's not a flat character and that she could actually be there.

The people in my group doing character concepts, including myself are struggling to stylize our model (Holly). Trying to stylize, yet show that it still looks like Holly. Some of us have a habit of majorly stylizing or going full on cartoon - which isn't a bad thing at all, but as we are leaning more towards a realistic style it is definitely challenging. The tutors recommend looking up caricature tutorials to get a better sense on capturing a person. Keat suggested drawing people, or in our case Holly, in profile view so we can get a clearer view on her facial features so we can easily translate further drawings to straight on or three-quarter.

Keat had a really understanding point on a part of our final script. In one line, the husband says  'it was my fault, I couldn't save you' he said that this needs to be further explained , like the audience would want to know what happened and how it happened. Simply changing the line is the best solution like 'it should've been me not you' this is something our group can easily come to terms with.

The team is going really well with their individual tasks and I can't wait to see the final video!
#exciting

We have a Model!

AWESOME NEWS! We have a model to base our character off!!
She's a great friend from high school that I asked to be apart of our project and we will be stylizing her for our project.

It's a bit tricky trying to figure out what style to go with for the character though as we want her to look sort of realistic. Also finding the kind of animation look we want to go for.
I thought of A-Ha's music video for Take On Me as in the video it consists of a live action character interacting with a 2D character. The characters still resemble themselves when they are animated and I think this would be a cool method to use for our animation - Sketchy and still stylized realistically.

Concept Designs

Here are some concept designs! I'm not the greatest at concepts, but it can be fun and it's good to practice. Our character will be animated in a mirror, but not her whole body will be shown. I'm focusing on the head for now as this is basically where all the attention will go when the camera is on her. (Will probably only see her waist and up).

An important thought came to mind when I was drawing these concept up.
We will be having a photo of the husband and wife at the end of the scene and I thought it would be quite odd to have a life action character and a 2D character together in a photo (back when the wife was still alive). I thought that maybe we could base the design from a live action person that could take the photo with the husband. The husband has a sort of unclear image of what his wife looks like, this is why she'd look a bit different than how she does in the photo. Regardless of this idea, our group would need to discuss this idea before we could really go in further with the concept designing. PLUS we would quickly need to find someone who would fit the role of being the wife.
BUT until then, I will carry on drawing up concepts for my team. - Don't want to have nothing at all to fall back on to if this idea fails.

Another solution to this is incorporating the live action husband and 2D wife in the photo, but blurring the wife a bit, so that the audience wouldn't find it weird that a live action man was married to a 2D character. It'd be like the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Final Production Schedule

I'm posting this a bit late! I edited the part that was changed by the tutors, which is 3D modelling that I will be doing in weeks 5 & 6. This is on our groups google drive as well, but it's good to put it here on the blog too as it is a good reminder for our group.

Female Style

WOOT here's another blog post for today. This is a bit all over the place and at stages..I don't know what I'm talking about...bit tired. Just rambling on. Yeah, hope it makes sense!

Style of Animation

Seeing that the woman is deceased, I thought that having her perfectly animated in terms of making the animation really crisp and clear, would make her look too real and alive. I reckon a style of animation would help show that she is deceased and a memory from the past so to speak.
In movies, ghosts tend to have an outer glow, are slightly transparent (Casper) or have slow or wispy movements (like leaving the onion skinning on) etc. Using this type of approach to animate and better show the state of the woman I feel would work really well. Also how the man doesn't have a clear image of how she looks anymore, this would further help this method.

Floor Plan & lighting

Today we decided on a rough layout for the floor plan and from what side of the room the man enters the apartment. I suggested that we change it to the man coming in from the left as the western world is left to right and it would be more clear for the audience.

In terms of lighting I first imagined the lighting being a saturated orange, but then blue represents sadness which is what this story is - sad. Having both blue and orange would be nice as they are complementary colours and would add nicely to the scene.
Lots of ideas were thrown around determining what kind of lighting we would implement.
- Small amount of light coming through the curtains.
- Light coming from a different room
-Bad lighting from a lamp
-curtains + curtain rod on the floor, street light emitting orange light through out the apartment, newspaper stuck to the windows to block out light.
We want to go with rather dim lighting as full on roof lights being on or strong lighting would be too much and ruin the mood.If the lighting is to be orange, it wouldn't be like fire lighting as it would be too warm - in terms of the mood rather than the temperature given off from the fire.

Uncooperative PC

GRRRRR I'm trying to make the final production schedule (with the slight change the tutors made) but none of the programs on my computer will let me change it or even type in it.
Gotta quickly do that small change tomorrow before class starts -.-

Why do you do this to me PC. WHY HAVE YOU BETRAYED ME.
But yeah nah, it's just me doing some modelling for a week or 2 rather than filming.

Working on the Final Script.

OOPS, this is a late post -.- My internet here at home SUCKS.

So on Friday, Taylor and I were working on the final script and throwing more ideas around.

When there's an over the shoulder shot (behind the husband) I suggested a pan to focus more on the male and the newspaper on the table for when he looks down and sees the article about the past earthquake. Since the over the shoulder shot would last a while in the scene, going from that shot to a pan seems too drawn out and slow.
INSTEAD we're going with a close up shot straight to the newspaper. This way the audience can see what the article is and how it affects the following actions of the male. I reckon it's good to have lots of shots at a fast pacing part of the scene. MORE INTENSE.
Also, rather than having an earthquake shake in the 'real' world as it seems very convenient, I thought maybe he could shake from remembering the tragedy. He would say something along the lines of 'ít's all my fault' and shake from the thought.
We want the woman to stay calm and collected to show the man that she is ok and to ease his nerves.

We were going to have a note or picture fall out from behind the mirror - this would've worked well if we stuck with the mirror in the real world actually moving or smashing. But since this isn't the case, it would be very random for a note/ picture to fall down.
I suggested that we have a small polaroid type photograph sticking out underneath the newspaper article. When the male sees himself in the mirror and the woman is gone, he slowly looks down and sees the newspaper off to the side, with something sticking out.
He would've been so engrossed in the article and seeing the horrible past - looking at what he's lost and not seeing the good in what he had, just that it's gone. His wife is gone. He never noticed the photo until now because seeing his wife fade away in the mirror has lifted a big weight off his shoulders. He finally accepts it.
The photo would show the couple being happy in the past and that is what he should remember.
We haven't written out the final ending to the script yet, but I really like this idea (even if I suggested it..) but I feel like it's quite a nice ending and ties in well. The final say goes to Taylor though and I know she'll have a wonderful ending to her heartfelt idea of this story :)

Ideas for Final Script

Ok so yesterday my internet at home kept disconnecting, so I couldn't post this yesterday #rage.  Sooooo this was written yesterday.
Today our group went over the final production schedule and it's mostly 3D work plus filming, no 2D. We're all pretty happy with our roles and what we need to do over the semester.
I will mainly be doing filming and editing as 3D is definitely not my strong point.
I started reading over the script with Taylor and giving her feedback and ideas on what we can change to finalize the script.

I imagine the male character as a clumsy character like Milo from Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). He's very absorbed in his work which can be a distraction from his deceased wife. I also imagine him being quite clumsy which used to make his wife giggle. He'd be even more clumsy after his wife passed away as he'd find it hard to keep it together as if his life is crumbling down.
We also talked to our tutors about the script which needs to be finalized by Monday. We got lots of awesome feedback and ideas to throw around. At first it was a bit overwhelming, but ideas were running through my head as well which was pre exciting.
I reckon we felt more like a group as we threw ideas around to finalize the events in the script which was neat. We were really immersed which is what we need to be!
We threw a lot of ideas around for the mirror breaking. Plus slight changes. (Lots ot these points are my ideas also as ideas popped up in my head as I wrote others out).

-the wife died in an earthquake.

-the wife looks ghostly

-The environment in the mirror isn't just the deceased wife, but also the apartment behind her, only it is clean and undamaged. (The apartment is originally damaged and run down from a past earthquake). So it has a big contrast in terms of before and after the earthquake that originally damaged the apartment.
-the mirror inside the apartment where the  male is, is unaffected by the earthquake. (the earthquake that incurs inside the mirror that the wife is in.)
-the wife would look ghostly and maybe a bit transparent. I imagined her as one colour. Having full on multiple colours would make her look more alive which isn't what we really want to go for. She'd look very out of this world and more ghostly. Every time she moves they'd be a type of trail and I thought using onion skinning would look quite neat.
-we were gonna go with the wife being 3D, but to achieve a ghostly appearance and slightly slow movements we've decided to animate her in 2D. She could possibly be rotoscoped to achieve a slight uncanny vibe to her movements. Can give this a try to use some realistic movements as well. Due to this change we made a new production schedule implementing 2D animation as well as 3D environment. Cool.
-in terms of environment we didn't really think about where to film it and I think we all would've had very different ideas of what the environment would look like. Plus finding a place would be rather difficult also. SO we going with a 3D background which we can later alter once the filming is done (which would come under layout).
-the shaking in the mirror is the wife reliving the earthquake, but she is showing the man that she is ok. That she accepts it and that he should accept it too. When she died, he was worried because he didn't know if she was 'ok', if she had accepted her death and moved on.
-when the earthquake in the mirror occurs, Rather than the wife looking sad/scared,shed be smiling, showing the male that it's going to be ok.

-When the shaking ends, we were gonna have some sort of meaningful note written by the wife or a photo of the characters together. We further explored our options for this idea.
   - A happy photo of the couple to remind the male of their past happiness.
-A note written by the wife (explaining that she's ok, but this would seem rather odd. like she's come back from the dead just to write him a note).
   - Patrick suggested that there is a newsprint and some letters are smudged and a message appears saying 'I'm ok' or something along those lines.
   - I suggested that we could combine these by having a happy picture on the couple and on the back there would be the date it was taken and where it was taken. Some letters would be smudged or faded and a message would come up saying 'I'm ok' etc.

WEEK 2 Game Analysis

The game Facade does make user input feel meaningful in terms of story direction and progression as the story direction is decided on what the player says.

I played the games a few times and each time I played, I would either come off as happy to see the characters Grace and Trip or grumpy - like I didn't want to be there. Although these different methods still progressed to a similar outcome. Grace and Trip would always fight and the player would be stuck in the middle whether they're trying to help or stay out of it.

The beginning and end of the narrative in Facade are set depending which path the player decides to take. If I made ill-mannered comments, Grace or Trip would snap at me while fighting or kick me out. When I tried to be kind and patient with them, they still fought, but Grace ended up leaving. In the beginning I am invited to Grace and Trip's apartment and at the end, a character leaves and everyone is unhappy. The fight between the married couple is inevitable and rather depressing. The user input is definitely meaningful in this game as it helps progress the narrative.

Although some things I say aren't always processed properly. I told Grace and Trip that I'm not taking sides then Trip tells me to quit taking sides (shown in the image below, I chose the name Amy). With this, I don't have the expected response from what I say sometimes which can be annoying.
